value

Value refers to the lightness or darkness of a gray tone or of a color. Values can be made with any drawing media such as graphite, ink, charcoal and pastel. Value can be created with any painting media as well. Values are also associated with the gray values and color of natural materials such as stone and metal.

The lighter the color or the gray is -- we say the lighter the value. The darker the color or the gray is -- we say the darker the value. For instance most yellows are a lighter value. Forest green is a darker value. Black is the darkest value and white is the lightest value. Most reds and greens are called mid-values as they are in the middle between the lightest lights and the darkest darks.
